An Aside On Getting Old

You know you have grown old when all the people who were old to you when you were young -- the grandparents, the aunts, the uncles, your parents’ best friends -- are  either barely alive or no more. Getting old is despizable because it literalizes loss in the bleakest of terms. You are the youngest of the oldest, of which there is none left.
